In 2013, the Institute for Democratic Initiatives (IDI) was established by a group of prominent lawyers and public figures to support democratic values, human rights, fair and transparent elections in Azerbaijan.

Currently, IDI does not have official registration. Despite repeated applications to the Justice Ministry for official registration, the organization was illegally denied obtaining registration.

The matter was therefore taken to the court. However, all domestic courts upheld the refusal of the Ministry of Justice.

On April 06, 2015, IDI appealed to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) to ensure its rights. Recently, the communication has been completed and IDI waits for the result.
